Axar Patel – Player Profile
Axar Patel is a left-arm spinner who has become more useful with the bat, making him a bowling allrounder. In his first year for Gujarat, he played only one first-class match. But in 2013, he had a good year, helping India Under-23s win the ACC Emerging Teams Cup. He took seven wickets in that tournament, including four wickets in the semi-final against UAE. In the Ranji Trophy that year, Axar was strong with both bat and ball. He scored 369 runs, with an average of 46.12, and took 29 wickets at an average of 23.58.
Axar got an IPL contract with Mumbai Indians before the 2013 season, but he didn’t play any games. In 2014, he switched to Kings XI Punjab and had a better season, taking 16 wickets with an economy rate of 6.22. This performance earned him a spot in the Indian ODI team for the Bangladesh tour, although he played only one match.
Axar made his T20 debut in 2015 against Zimbabwe. For the next few years, he was in and out of India’s limited-overs teams, often filling in when Ravindra Jadeja was unavailable. His Test debut came in 2021 when Jadeja was injured. Axar took five wickets in his first Test match and an amazing 11 wickets in the next match, ending the series with 27 wickets. In 2022, he hit a quick 27-ball fifty, his first in ODIs, helping India win a series against West Indies.
