Glenn James Maxwell was born on October 14, 1988, in Kew, Melbourne, Victoria. Currently 35 years old, he is a right-hand batsman and a right-arm offbreak bowler. Known for his aggressive batting and unique shot-making ability, Maxwell plays the role of a batting allrounder in the Australian cricket team.
Glenn Maxwell is known as one of the fastest scorers in world cricket. He has made a big impact in limited-overs formats like One Day Internationals (ODIs) and T20s. Maxwell’s ability to play unconventional shots, such as reverse sweeps and pulls, makes it tough for bowlers to set fields against him. His unique style allows him to score runs in all directions. While his bold approach can sometimes be risky, it also means he can change the course of a match very quickly when he is at his best. Besides his batting skills, Maxwell is also a good off-spin bowler and an exceptional fielder, making him a valuable asset in shorter formats of the game.
One of his greatest performances came during the 2023 ODI World Cup against Afghanistan. In that match, Maxwell scored an astonishing 201 not out from just 128 balls, helping Australia win the game from a very difficult position.
Maxwell has also made some notable contributions in Test cricket. He scored his first Test century in 2017 against India in Ranchi. Although he was dropped from the ODI team for a short period, he returned strongly and hit his third T20I century in Bangalore in 2019, leading Australia to chase a target of 191 runs. His performance in the ODI series against Pakistan in the UAE that followed was also a highlight of his career.
In late 2019, Maxwell took a break from cricket to focus on his mental health. During this time, discussions with Australia’s white-ball captain Aaron Finch helped him regain his confidence and form. He returned in 2020, scoring five 45-plus scores in six ODI innings and had a good IPL season with Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2021. In January 2022, Maxwell became the first player to score over 150 runs in a single innings in the Big Bash League (BBL). However, he didn’t have a major impact in the 2021 and 2022 T20 World Cups.
Maxwell first made his name in domestic cricket for Victoria when he hit a 19-ball half-century against Tasmania in the 2010-11 season, which was the fastest fifty in Australia’s one-day domestic history at that time. He carried this explosive style into international cricket as well. During the 2015 World Cup, Maxwell smashed a 51-ball century against Sri Lanka in Sydney, which was then the fastest hundred for Australia in ODIs and the second-fastest in World Cup history.
Although Australia has used Maxwell in Test cricket, he hasn’t had the same level of success as in the shorter formats. One unique moment came in 2013 in Delhi when Maxwell opened both the batting and the bowling for Australia in the same Test match, a rare occurrence.
In late 2022, Maxwell had a major setback when he broke his leg at a friend’s birthday party. This injury kept him out of cricket for some time, but his talent and experience ensure that he remains an important player for Australia in white-ball cricket.
