India Men’s Cricket Team History
India played their first Test match in 1932 against England at Lord’s. But it took them many years to become a strong team in world cricket. In the early 1970s, Sunil Gavaskar, one of the best Indian batters, became the first player to score 10,000 runs in Test matches. Around the same time, Kapil Dev, one of the world’s best all-rounders, made his mark.
The Indian cricket team gained major attention after winning their first ODI World Cup in 1983. This victory increased the sport’s popularity across the country. By the late 1990s, cricket had become the most-watched sport in India, and TV rights deals began to bring in a lot of money.
In the 1990s and 2000s, many great players like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Sourav Ganguly, and Virender Sehwag became superstars. Tendulkar, in particular, broke many records and became a cricket icon around the world.
India’s Test team has been very strong, especially at home. Since 1987, they have lost only three home series. In the 1990s, spin bowlers like Anil Kumble, one of India’s best-ever bowlers, helped the team dominate at home. In the 2010s, India also produced excellent fast bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, making the team strong both at home and abroad.
India went 11 Test series without a loss between 2008-2009, and won two consecutive Test series in Australia starting in 2018-19. They also reached the final of the World Test Championship twice in a row.
In limited-overs cricket (ODIs and T20s), India has been less consistent. They had success in the 1980s but had to wait until 2007 for their next major win in the T20 World Cup. This was followed by more victories, including the ODI World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013. In 2024, India won the T20 World Cup again after a long wait.
One of the biggest changes in Indian cricket over the past 50 years has been the birth of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Starting in 2008, the IPL is now the biggest and most competitive T20 cricket league in the world, and it has helped many Indian players become famous.
